Quilt size calculator
Choose your mattress, say how far the quilt should hang over the sides, and get the finished quilt size and a block count. Backing and binding yardage come with it.

How the quilt size calculator works
Width is the mattress width plus the mattress depth and the drop on both sides. Length is the mattress length plus one depth and drop (the foot of the bed) plus the pillow tuck, the extra fabric that folds under and over the pillows. Leave the pillow tuck at 0 for a quilt that stops at the pillows, and set the drop to 0 for a coverlet that just covers the mattress top and sides.
Backing is the top plus 4″ on every side, which is the margin most longarm quilters ask for. Binding assumes 2½″ double-fold strips cut across 42″ fabric, with 12″ extra for joins and mitred corners. Batting is cut to the same size as the backing.
Standard mattress sizes
| Bed | Mattress | Typical quilt |
|---|---|---|
| Crib | 28″ × 52″ | 36″ × 52″ |
| Twin | 38″ × 75″ | 70″ × 90″ |
| Full | 54″ × 75″ | 81″ × 96″ |
| Queen | 60″ × 80″ | 90″ × 108″ |
| King | 76″ × 80″ | 108″ × 108″ |
| California king | 72″ × 84″ | 102″ × 108″ |
Mattress depth varies more than anything else: older mattresses are about 9″, many new ones are 12″ to 16″, and a pillow-top can be deeper. Measure yours before you buy fabric.
Throw and lap quilt sizes
A throw for the sofa is usually around 50″ × 65″ to 60″ × 70″; a lap quilt about 36″ × 48″; a baby quilt 36″ × 48″ to 40″ × 50″. These don't depend on a mattress, so set the size directly in the quilt design tool.
